Me & HDR Photography

Sun Aug 17, 2008, 8:53 AM
I just joined deviantART this morning because of a recommendation from a friend. I got my first digital camera [a PowerShot SD1100] in May 2008 (a gift from my older brother), and I'd always had an interest in photography - especially cool High Dynamic Range (HDR) ones that I've seen on the internet. I wanted to figure out how to do them, and I've had a lot of fun with this new hobby.

I am by no means a professional photographer (I'm actually a financial planner), but I think it'd be fun to see if I could turn my hobby into a self-sustaining one. Hopefully people will actually want to buy my photos - any money I make from them I'll put right back into my hobby - which would mean a better camera/equipment, a better computer/software to edit them, and help fund my vacations (I love to travel).

I've just been tinkering around with HDR for fun, but I'd love to learn how to do it better. Right now, the majority of my shots are taken and created with the following equipment:

Digital Camera
Tripod ($20 from Sears)
Photomatix 3.0

...and that's it. The actual photographs are taken at EV -2,-1,0,-1,and 2, then combined together in photomatix, and then edited to whoever cool I make make them look.

If you have tips on how to be a better HDR photographer, please share them with me! For instance, how the hell are people able to get people in HDR? Are there cameras that can take multiple exposures all at once? Let me know!

To create HDR photos of people you need to shoot in Raw and then create multiple images with different exposures in post production rather than actually taking multiple photos. Hope this helps.

thanks, it helps a lot! i'm totally new to all this, how do you take photos in "RAW"? Do i need a better camera? right now all i have is a PowerShot SD1100 IS, and a $20 tripod - I'll get better stuff when I can afford it =) At least I'm able to find cool stuff to shoot =D

I looked up your camera and it in fact cannot shoot in raw.raw is just another mode you can shoot in, such as normal, fine, basic, or whatever they are on your camera. Im not sure if any point and shoots can shoot in raw, ive only seen it on dslrs. raw is pretty much a mode with much more leeway on what you can adjust in post production while maintaining an acceptable looking photo.
